The people behind the science
Waste Magic is a 16-strong team of scientists, engineers and business leaders commercialising Dr Jamil Rima's catalytic carbonisation process from Australia to China, Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa.

The inventor
Dr Jamil Rima
Inventor and Chief Technology Officer
An award-winning professor of physical chemistry, Dr Jamil Rima has held visiting professorships at the University of Hawaii, Duke University, New York University, Syracuse University, Université de Sherbrooke and Monash University. His pioneering research into catalytic molecular destabilisation led to the invention of Waste Magic's core conversion process, enabling the carbonisation of organic material without combustion. As CTO, Dr Rima leads the scientific development of the technology and works alongside the engineering team to advance its commercial application. “I have always believed that science should solve real problems and improve people's lives. Waste Magic represents the transformation of decades of research into technology with the potential to fundamentally change how we manage waste.” — Dr Jamil Rima Close
